Lab Policies

Ethics
Experimental ethics
Perform and interpret all experiments ethically. There will never be consequences for failed experiments or negative data. There is a zero tolerance for data manipulation. Be careful not to plagiarize when writing. We will have continued discussions during one on one meetings and lab meetings about ethical conduct in science. Whenever there is a question, please ask Jon.

Authorship
It is our expectation that each trainee will have two independent projects and they will serve as primary author on manuscripts related to each. We also value collaboration. It is expected that each trainee will serve as a contributing author on other manuscripts from the lab, other labs at Loyola, and other institutions. If the primary author leaves, before the completion of a project authorship discussions will be held at that time

Data Keeping & Lab Notebooks
Keep track of protocols and major experiments in a lab notebook. In addition to a lab notebook, keeping digital raw data is critical. Do not keep data and documents on your computer. Keep all data on the lab cloud service. For sequencing data, deposit all copies of all raw and processed data onto lab hard drives, before analysis.

Artificial Intelligence
AI is a tool like many of the other tools we use in the lab. While it can be incredibly useful, it is important to know its limitations. This technology is rapidly evolving and we will continue to have conversations about how we can best use it in our work. Please talk to Jon before using it to make sure we are using it responsibly and ethically.
